Sony’s Nimway solution facilitates office life and student research at IKDC
How can large organisations create working environments where technology-savvy millennial employees will thrive? A recent article published by the municipality of Lund announced that Sony's smart office system, Nimway, is being installed at the Ingvar Kamprad Design Center (Lund’s Technical College) in the autumn of 2020. Might the collaboration kickstart a new generation of smart office solutions?
How Nimway will be used at IKDC
Once installed at the Ingvar Kamprad Design Center in Lund, Sony’s Nimway solution will be used both to improve the working environment for staff. But more than that, the solution will be used and as a platform for students’ research projects. Students will have the opportunity to connect external sensors and test new smart office features.
According to Fredrik Nilsson, head of the Department of Design Sciences at IKDC, connecting different sensors to the existing Nimway system could enable interesting new functionalities. For example, particle sensors could measure the spread of infection, while others could measure light, noise, heat and carbon dioxide.
Exploring the potential of a smart office
Nilsson sees plenty of potential for experimentation: “We could simulate using motion sensors to detect whether or not people have left the room during a fire... or we add VR and AR to describe our premises for visitors… or set up a system to help visually impaired people navigate the building.”
The Sony team is equally enthusiastic. Nimway’s marketing manager, Ivana Milanovic, says they’re looking forward to taking part in the next wave of exciting ideas to improve the working environment. “Through IKDC we get a chance to collaborate with young innovators and start-up companies. In order to retain tech-savvy millennials in companies, it is important to create environments where they will thrive. In this project, we receive direct feedback from them,” she explains.
